		<description>
Tewa Barnosa (1998) is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural worker based between Tripoli and Amsterdam. Her practice spans installation, painting, and time-based media, including film essays, sound works, and performance. Her work carries an inquiry and speculation around spatial and infrastructural violence, Fascist technology, inherited memories and transmissions from lands, people and species that outlasts the aftermath of genocidal and ecological continuum. her process unfolds along two interconnected trajectories: a sonic evocation and oral tradition of collective vocality, rhythms and anti-colonial poetry rooted in Amazigh and Bedouin knowledge systems, electro-acoustic compositions and field recordings. and a trajectory of visual and image based research into politics of the archive, questioning the roles of imagery, iconography, video games and cinema in constructing or manipulating past and ongoing political imaginaries.

Her pedagogical and socially engaged practice emerged through establishing collective infrastructures in post-revolution Libya. Between 2015 and 2023, she initiated and directed WaraQ, an art space and laboratory based in Tripoli. During this period, she curated and led several projects situated within the knowledge and lived realities of the Libyan civil war, including Totalitarian Props (2023), an exhibition on the socio-political implications of Pan-Africanism and Pan-Arabism movements; Shifting Sands (2021), a mentorship program and exhibition bringing together artists, activists, and academics across Libya around methods of archiving; Kashkoul of Collective Resistance (2020), a collaborative publication reflecting on life under bombardment during the pandemic; and ArtOut (2018), a series of artistic gatherings in the public spaces of Tripoli's Old City.

Barnosa is an alumni of the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague 2024-2025. A resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten 2021-2023, a recipient of S+T+Arts and Arts Electronica African distinction awards 2025, the Iwaelwahaus African Artist Award 2021, and the Berlin-based fellowship for artists at risk by the Martin Roth initiative 2019-2020.

The Insurgence of Ghibli Winds&#38;nbsp;The Warlabs Triology P1
25’ Min
2025

Departing from an event that shaped the mechanisms for asymmetrical warfare, when an Italian pilot executed the first aerial bombing in history over an oasis in Tripoli during the Italo Turkish Senussi war in 1911, a colonial industry of desert domination was established through wheels and wings.

Tracing the temporal path of imperial vertical power in the landscape leads to acts of geographic defiance against American imperialism between the 1980s and 1990's in Libya that set the tone of the "War on Terror" propaganda, navigated in the film through military archival footage and early computer graphics from American games produced in the 80's where a pilot leads a mission to destroy imagined nuclear plants in the gulf of Sirte by the central Libyan coast.

The narration unfolds in a dialogue between the Ghibli winds and Caproni, the Italian designer of Ghibli aircraft, the film traces the struggle to resist colonial violence and reclaim the indigenous Ghibli winds as an insurgent rebel, an entity that can’t be tamed, claimed or manufactured, against the backdrop of surveilled skies and militarized Sahara.
-The Warlab trilogy is a series of experimental docu-fiction films investigating the gamification of the military industrial complex, navigating histories and speculations around warfare tactics and theatrics to question the influence of fascism on the game industry and vice versa. Utilizing game archeology, world-building, archival footage and RPG video games where Libya and the African Sahel is situated as a frontline for militarised operations led by imperial propaganda.

In Yesterday’s ForecastsPerformance In collaboration with ghenwa noire abou fayad
50’minutes
2025

When the Silphium plant was discovered in ancient Cyrenaica (East Libya) after heavy rains and floods that hit the Mediterranean, it became a pillar of the economy and expansion of The Greek and Roman colonies until it was overharvested, heavily exploited, and documented as the first extinction of a species in our natural history. Centuries later, the Silphium returned as a symbol of the fascist reign on the Italian coat of arms when they colonized Libya in 1911, followed by establishing more than seventeen concentration camps where a third of Cyrenaica’s population was exterminated; yet, their poetry survives, and so does the memory of the Silphium.

The performance “In Yesterday’s Forecasts” explores connections between the first documented extinction and the mass-extermination of the Libyan people during the Libyan genocide (1928-1942). The lost Silphium plant and Fascism hidden histories become intertwined in a composition of recitations, soundscapes, visual worlds of the archival and the imaginary, testimonial poems and oralities based on Tamazight and Bedouin poetry. In sonic dialogue with the ancient tradition of millstone grinding known across North Africa as Al Raha.

A Collaboration between: Tewa Barnosa, Sina M Fard and Antonia Kattou
2025

Named Raha in Libya, Sheromilli in Cyprus and Asiab dasti in Iran. The ancient tradition of millstone grinders is one of the early technological tools humans invented to harvest seeds of their labour. In Eastern and African cultures, it nurtured a communal momentum within ecological ecosystems, giving birth to a genre of oral literature by elderly women whose hums, chants and poetry around the Raha form rhythms of resistance, lament, pride and indigenous knowledge of multiple mother tongues. The Raha becomes the instrument, a body of resonance and the medium in the ritual, two women would rotate the stone repetitively while singing and reciting notions of the land and its people, cosmological predictions and anti-colonial storytelling.

Written To Not Remain (12’30) is based on a visual investigation looking into the acts of writing on the walls across post-revolution Libya. positioning collective statements as ephemeral evidence of contemporary and historical dialogue, social commentary, war correspondences, or often silent protests.

In this video work combining archival footage and digital acts made in a virtual reality simulation, Barnosa translates and transmits a photo archive she began collecting in 2019. Serving as testimonies on the western-led manufactured wars in Libya following the Arab Spring in 2011, and elaborating on a selection from over 200 images of writings, as source materials alongside a text recitation.

Bint El Barzakh: Introspective

Bint el Barzakh: (Daughter of the Isthmus) is an installation consisting of a sculptural object, and a video work introducing a fictional character, narrating histories and speculations that are situated between two waters without merging or transgression. Set in Ras El Bar north of Egypt, where the Nile meets the Mediterranean. The site of liminality becomes a landscape of contemplation on myths, memories, migration, and absence.

The work weaves together research, poetry, and science fiction about the ecological phenomenon of The Barzakh in nature, and navigates its roots in Islamic philosophy, drawing upon the legacy of the early Muslim scholar and poet Ibn Arabi.

The sculptural object in the work is a result of experimentation with crystallography processes. The topology of Bismuth– a crystalline metal known to be a facet for electrical insulations, forms a hinge state when established on the edges of the crystal, where two vertical and horizontal faces meet in a square spiral symmetry pattern, without the crystal-metal losing its density or possibility of electrical conductions. Offering a parallel material exploration speculating around possibilities of transgression and collision within the conceptual framework of the Barzakh.

“White are our olivesRed is the color of blood spelled on the yearsBlack are the bones of the betrayed martyrsThey won’t wash awayThe shamless crimes of monsters”
The rare white olive is native to the lands of Tarhuna in west Libya and was heavily exploited during the era of the italian colonization of Libya. In 2020-2021, Many EU funded militias committed massacres in the region of Tarhuna, leaving behind dozens of mass graves of Libyans near the same fields of white olives.
